Step 1. Self Reflection

Before planning, ask yourself some tough but crucial questions: What do I enjoy doing? What am I good at? What values guide me?

I once had a friend called Treasure She loved helping people but was stuck in an administrative job. After reflecting, she realized her passion for teaching and started exploring ways to transition into education.

Write down your answers. Seeing them on paper makes them real and actionable.

Try to understand what works for, what do you do passionately with ease? Take that serious.

Step 2: Know Your Long Term Goals

Sometimes you need to ask yourself, with this career path I choose where will I be in the next five years? Be specific! You don’t have to think of becoming successful instead think of becoming higher than you currently are, improvements comes with success. 

As always I will always give you examples, My long time friend Jason wanted to work in tech but wasn’t clear on the specifics. After defining his goal becoming a software engineer at a leading firm he had a target to aim for. As a software engineer Jason is not just working but he is also learning, and with his critical knowledge on software engineering Jason will be promoted in no due time. 

Step 3: Break Down Your Goals

I Usually tell people that the popular saying little drop of water makes a  mighty ocean is not just a saying, it also works with your goals. Big goals can feel overwhelming, breaking them into smaller, manageable steps  is all you need you will not know how far you have gone until its time for self reflection. So don’t allow your goals over power you break them into smaller steps.

If you have plans of becoming your company team leader, you can break your goals to: 

Short-term (1 year): Take a leadership course.

Mid-term (3 years): Lead small projects.

Long-term (5 years): Manage a team.

Can you see how easy it can be, you can’t just wake up one morning and become community leader, you need to make a strategic plan on how you can achieve it bit by bit. 

Step 4: Identify Skills You Need

Now, list the skills you need to achieve your goals. You need to know what skills you need, do you want to become a digital marketer? you need to know what courses you should take, what platform are you utilizing first and can you even do Digital Marketing?

Research job descriptions for the role you aspire to. Look for patterns in required qualifications and skills.

I usually tell people that networking is not just about sharing business cards and exchanging numbers, can those people help you reach your goals? . The  best you can do for career is build genuine relationships that will help your career. Throw away that list of 2000 numbers that can’t even help you at your lowest moment and get 20, genuine numbers that can show up for you even at midnight.

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket; This simple means that you should keep your options open, Goals may change, industries may shift, and new opportunities might arise. If your plans are not flexible, you will always find yourself in complicating spot, trying to figure out what happened. But with flexible options if one door closes you move on to the next.

Step 9: Track Your Progress

Set milestones and celebrate when you achieve them. Progress isn’t always linear, but tracking your achievements keeps you motivated.
